Attack of the Frozen Woodchucks

A short while ago, the kind ladies at MotherTalk asked me to review The Attack of the Frozen Woodchucks by Dan Elish. My son and I quickly read the excerpt they included and we were both hooked. We anxiously waited for the book to arrive at our doorstep and once it did we read, read and read. It made a great bedtime read-aloud.

Here's my interview with my Son:

Who was your favorite character?
Jimmy. I like how he tried and tried to find his father and he didn't give up, even when the police did. That's what I would do for (my) Daddy.

What about the other characters?
Imogene is silly and only 2, but I like her. She reminds me of my cousin. I would probably have fun playing with her. And Janice. I'm glad she is getting friends now.

What did you like about the book?
All of it. The spaceship from the attic. The woodchucks. The adventure. That is was made up, but when you read it it's like it's really happening.

And now for Mom's 2 cents:

This book is a great read for older kids - 5th grade to 9th grade. It's also highly enjoyable for a parent. Mr. Elish has done a great job at developing believable, well-developed and likable characters. The pace is just right. And his writing allows you to picture what is happening as you read it. The creativity is perfect.

My son is already talking about turning our attic into a space ship and is on the lookout for odd-sized footprints when walking through our neighborhood.

And that's one thing that I love about reading. Watching the joy in your child as he takes a story with him on his own adventures.

We've been talking about this book so much even my Husband has commented that he'll probably read it too!
A definite thumbs up!
